A tourist has faced backlash after being caught on camera scattering ashes at the iconic Incan site of Machu Picchu.
The video, which has since gone viral, shows an unidentified woman in a black shirt pouring the ashes from a clear plastic bag onto one of the ancient stone platforms.
After emptying the contents, she folds up the bag and leaves, though not before bowing and sharing an embrace with a companion.

Her actions have stirred outrage and led to widespread calls to protect the 15th-century UNESCO World Heritage site in Peru.
The incident has raised concerns among locals and preservationists who argue that Machu Picchu is not a place for private memorials.
The Commission of Jurists of Cusco has issued a statement calling for an investigation, describing the act as potentially harmful to Peru’s Cultural Heritage.
T’ika Luiza Obregón, a lawyer and member of the Cusco commission, highlighted that scattering ashes at archaeological sites like Machu Picchu violates cultural preservation laws.
She expressed worry that such actions could set a precedent for using sacred spaces as venues for similar acts, emphasizing that these areas are meant solely for historical conservation.
