UConn star Paige Bueckers says embracing Christianity is becoming more common in women’s basketball

Paige Bueckers: A Beacon of Faith and Excellence in Women’s Basketball
Paige Bueckers, the star point guard for the University of Connecticut (UConn) women’s basketball team, has always been a standout on the court. Known for her exceptional skills and leadership, Bueckers has also become a prominent figure in openly expressing her Christian faith. Her unwavering commitment to her spirituality has not only shaped her personal journey but has also inspired her peers to embrace their own faith openly. In a world where Athletes often use their platforms to advocate for social justice, equality, or personal brands, Bueckers is among a growing number of athletes who are unapologetically prioritizing their faith.
Bueckers’ faith has been a cornerstone of her basketball career. Even in the face of setbacks, such as tearing her ACL in August 2022, she publicly credited God for her strength and resilience. In an Instagram post following the injury, she wrote, “There is going to be good days and there is going to be bad days but my absolute love for the game and Godly strength will get me back to where I need to be.” Six months later, she reflected on her recovery, noting that “God’s timing is never off.” Her return to the court for the 2023-24 season was nothing short of remarkable, leading UConn to the Final Four and delivering standout performances, including a 32-point game against Syracuse. After that game, she expressed her gratitude to God, saying, “I prayed so hard a year ago today to be in my shoes where I’m at right now.”
Bueckers’ openness about her faith has created a ripple effect in the sports world. She believes that the more athletes openly discuss their Christianity, the more it becomes normalized and accepted. “I feel like the more you see it, the more popularized it becomes, and the more comfortable everybody becomes with it,” she said in a postgame press conference. Her confidence in sharing her faith has made it easier for other players to do the same, creating a wave of athletes who are unafraid to express their spiritual beliefs.
This trend of athletes embracing and showcasing their faith is not limited to Bueckers or women’s basketball. Over the past year, Christianity has become a prominent theme in various sports. For instance, after the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX, players like Jalen Hurts, Darius Slay, and Saquon Barkley, along with head coach Nick Sirianni, openly thanked God for their victory. Similarly, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes consistently acknowledges his faith, even after losses. In baseball, Los Angeles Dodgers players Tommy Edman and Blake Treinen publicly expressed their gratitude to God during their World Series run. And in college football, players from Notre Dame and Ohio State highlighted their Christian faith during the 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship.
The rise of athletes openly discussing their faith signals a cultural shift in sports. For decades, Athletes have used their platforms to address social issues, but now, many are choosing to use their influence to share their spiritual journeys. Bueckers, along with other high-profile athletes, is proving that faith and sports are not mutually exclusive but can coexist in a powerful way. By openly praising God in moments of triumph, these athletes are inspiring countless young people who look up to them as role models.
As Bueckers gears up for her final March Madness run, her legacy extends far beyond the basketball court. She has shown the world that faith can be a source of strength, resilience, and purpose. Her story, along with those of other athletes, is a testament to the enduring power of spirituality in shaping lives and careers. Whether on the court or off, Bueckers continues to inspire, proving that faith and excellence go hand in hand.
