A would-be robber in Chile had a sudden change of heart mid-crime, ditching his original plan to hold up a shop and instead opting to buy sweets—before making off with a stolen bag of crisps.

Surreal CCTV footage from a store in Valdivia, south of Santiago, captured the young man as he stormed inside, drew a pistol from his waistband, and cocked it before aiming at the cashier.

With an authoritative tone, he demanded, “Hand over the money.”

The startled cashier, seemingly unfazed by the situation, responded bluntly, “What money do you want?” An awkward silence followed, and rather than escalating the situation, the gunman hesitated.

Then, as if realizing the absurdity of his actions, he let out a nervous chuckle, tucked his firearm back into his waistband, and fished a coin out of his pocket.

In a complete U-turn, he casually said, “All right, give me 100 pesos’ worth of sweets.”

Before leaving, he mumbled a sheepish apology to the cashier, repeating, “Sorry, love, sorry, love.”

Unimpressed by his sudden remorse, the cashier sternly warned him, “You don’t mess around with things like that,” as she handed over what amounted to just 8p worth of sweets.

As he made his way toward the exit, the young man’s impulse control faltered again.

In a final act of rebellion, he swiped a bag of crisps from a nearby stand and bolted out the door.

His getaway took an unexpected twist when, in the rush to flee, his pistol slipped from his waistband and landed dangerously close to a pair of startled pedestrians.

He turned back momentarily before continuing his escape down the road.

Authorities later tracked him down and arrested him, leaving locals both amused and baffled by the incident.

Social media users wasted no time poking fun at his failed attempt at crime.

Andrea quipped, “His first gig.”
