DOGE initial findings on Defense Department DEI spending could save $80M, agency says

The Department of Defense’s Push to Slash Wasteful Spending on DEI Programs
The Department of Defense (DOD) has announced a new initiative to cut down on what it describes as wasteful spending, with a particular focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. According to a recent statement, the DOD could save up to $80 million by eliminating certain DEI initiatives that it deems non-essential to its core mission. This effort is part of a broader collaboration with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a task force led by Elon Musk, which has been charged with identifying and reducing unnecessary expenditures across federal agencies.
Initial Findings Highlight Questionable Spending
The DOD, through its partnership with DOGE, has already identified several programs that it considers to be misallocations of funds. Among these are a $1.9 million investment in holistic DEI transformation and training for the Air Force and a $6 million grant to the University of Montana aimed at "strengthening American democracy by bridging divides." Additionally, $1.6 million was allocated to the University of Florida to study the social and institutional challenges related to climate resilience in Africa. These expenditures, according to DOD spokesman Sean Parnell, are examples of spending that does not align with the military’s primary objectives.
"This stuff is just not a core function of our military," Parnell emphasized. "This is not what we do. This stuff is a distraction from our core mission." He further stated that these initial findings could lead to savings of up to $80 million, which would be better spent on initiatives that directly support the DOD’s operational priorities.
A Shift in Focus: Prioritizing Core Military Functions
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has been vocal about the need to refocus the DOD’s efforts on its mission-critical activities. In line with this, Hegseth directed the DOD’s civilian workforce to comply with a productivity email sent by Elon Musk’s DOGE, despite initial instructions to ignore it. The email asked federal employees to list five things they had accomplished, a move seen as part of a broader push to increase accountability and efficiency within the government.
Hegseth also highlighted the role of DOGE in identifying redundancies and inefficiencies across federal agencies, including the Treasury, Labor, Education, and Health departments, as well as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Office of Personnel Management, and Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Many of the individuals working on the DOGE team are veterans, a fact that Hegseth described as a "good thing," since they are likely to understand the importance of streamlining government operations.
"They care just like we do," Hegseth said, "to find the redundancies and identify the last vestiges of Biden priorities—the DEI, the woke, the climate change B.S., that’s not core to our mission, and we’re going to get rid of it all."
Controversy Surrounding the DOGE Initiative
The collaboration between the DOD and DOGE has not been without controversy. Critics have accused President Donald Trump of granting Elon Musk and his team too much latitude, particularly in accessing sensitive government data. Some have raised concerns about the potential overreach of DOGE and the impact of its recommendations on federal programs that are perceived as progressive or aligned with the priorities of the previous administration.
Despite these criticisms, the DOD remains committed to its partnership with DOGE, framing it as a necessary step to eliminate wasteful spending and restore focus on the military’s core mission. The department’s leadership argues that by cutting programs that are deemed non-essential, it can allocate resources more effectively to areas that directly support national security and military readiness.
The Broader Implications of Cutting DEI Programs
The decision to slash funding for DEI programs has sparked a wider debate about the role of diversity and inclusion initiatives within the federal government. While supporters of these programs argue that they are essential for fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace, critics contend that they have become bloated and ineffective, often serving as a distraction from more pressing priorities.
For the DOD, the move to cut DEI programs reflects a broader shift in priorities under the current administration. By framing these initiatives as distractions from its core mission, the department is signaling a return to a more traditional view of military priorities, one that emphasizes operational efficiency and readiness over social and cultural initiatives.
Conclusion: A New Era of Government Efficiency?
The DOD’s partnership with DOGE represents a significant effort to reimagine how the federal government operates, with a particular emphasis on eliminating wasteful spending. While the decision to cut funding for DEI programs has been met with both praise and criticism, the department remains steadfast in its commitment to streamlining operations and refocusing on its core mission.
As the initiative moves forward, it will be important to monitor its impact on both the DOD’s operations and the broader federal bureaucracy. Whether this effort will usher in a new era of government efficiency, as its proponents claim, or whether it will simply serve as a politically charged exercise in budget-cutting, remains to be seen. One thing is clear, however: the collaboration between the DOD and DOGE has brought a new level of scrutiny to federal spending, and its outcomes will likely have far-reaching consequences for years to come.
