The Legacy of Harry Critchley: A Champion of Justice and Compassion
A Life of Purpose and Passion
Harry Critchley, a 32-year-old lawyer and advocate, left an indelible mark on Nova Scotia’s prison justice community before his sudden passing on February 21 due to an aortic aneurysm. His untimely death has left a profound void, yet his legacy continues to inspire those who knew him. Colleagues and friends remember Harry as an extraordinary advocate, a dedicated lawyer, and a loving husband and father. His impact on the lives of many is a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice and compassion.
Early Beginnings and the Call to Action
Harry’s journey into prison justice began during his time at the University of King’s College, where he volunteered with the Halifax Humanities Society. Teaching inmates at the Burnside Correctional Facility, he quickly realized the profound inequalities within the correctional system. This experience ignited a sense of responsibility in him, as he often expressed, “Once you learn about the correctional system—if you have the ability to do something, you have a responsibility to do it.” This mantra guided his work and fueled his passion for advocating for the rights of the incarcerated.
Founding the East Coast Prison Justice Society
In 2017, Harry co-founded the East Coast Prison Justice Society, an organization dedicated to supporting criminalized individuals and advocating for systemic change. Through this platform, he worked tirelessly to amplify the voices of those often marginalized by the justice system. His efforts not only shed light on the harsh realities faced by inmates but also provided hope and resources to those seeking rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Collaboration andImpact
Harry’s dedication extended beyond his work with the East Coast Prison Justice Society. He collaborated closely with the Elizabeth Fry Society, supporting its mission to aid women and girls in the justice system. Emma Halpern, a long-time friend and colleague, recalls Harry’s relentless dedication: “He gave all of his free time—all of it—to prison justice work. And with Harry’s help, E-Fry grew.” His contributions were instrumental in expanding the reach and impact of these organizations, leaving a lasting legacy in the communities they serve.
A Celebration of Life and Love
The outpouring of love and support at Harry’s memorial was a testament to the incredible impact he had on so many lives. His mother, Leah Harrington, reflected on the gathering, stating, “To see the outpouring of love and support—it’s just incredible.” Friends, colleagues, and those he helped over the years came together to celebrate his life, sharing stories of his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to justice.
A Lasting Legacy
Though Harry’s life was cut short, his work and spirit continue to inspire those in the prison justice community. His colleagues and friends remain committed to carrying forward his mission, ensuring that his legacy endures. As Emma Halpern so eloquently put it, “Harry in his short life has actually saved more lives than most people do in a lifetime.” His story serves as a reminder of the power of compassion, the importance of advocacy, and the enduring impact one person can have on the world. Harry Critchley’s legacy is not just a memory but a call to action, urging us all to continue striving for a more just and equitable society.
