NYC stepdad from hell forced kid to eat own vomit, beat him within inches of his life as punishment for eating brownies: prosecutors

Horrific Abuse Unveiled: A Queens Stepdad Accused of Brutal Attack on 8-Year-Old Stepson
The Brutal Attack: A Stepfather’s Wrath Over Brownies
In a disturbing incident that has shaken the community, Davien Reid Sr., a 43-year-old stepfather from Queens, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly subjecting his 8-year-old stepson to a horrific ordeal. According to prosecutors, the violent attack occurred in April 2024 at the family’s home on 88th Avenue in Richmond Hill. The alleged trigger for this brutal assault was Reid’s suspicion that the child had secretly eaten his brownies. What followed was a relentless and merciless beating that left the young boy with life-threatening injuries, including fractures to his neck and back, as well as internal injuries. The attack was so severe that it could have ended the child’s life, prompting the attempted murder charge.
Prosecutors painted a grim picture of the events that unfolded. Reid, in a fit of rage, not only punched and kicked the child but also picked him up and repeatedly stomped on him. The abuse did not stop there; in a twisted act of humiliation, Reid forced the battered child to lick his own vomit off the floor. The boy’s physical and emotional suffering were compounded by the cruel actions of the man who was supposed to be his caregiver and protector.
The Mother’s Role: A Web of Deception and Prior Abuse
The boy’s mother, 31-year-old Dayanara Vargas, is also facing charges in connection with the abuse. When police arrived at the scene, Vargas allegedly fabricated a story, claiming that her son’s injuries resulted from a fight with his stepbrother. However, the severity of the boy’s condition—bruises covering his back and arms, a severely bruised and deformed head, and one eye swollen shut—told a very different story. The child was rushed to the hospital, where he spent three weeks recovering, including time spent being fed through feeding tubes. His neck injuries were so severe that he had to wear a cervical collar for five months.
This was not the first instance of abuse the child had endured. Prosecutors revealed that less than a year prior, Vargas herself had subjected her son to a violent act, striking him over the head with a broom with such force that it required multiple staples to close the wound. Vargas then took her son to an urgent care facility, where she lied about the circumstances of his injury. Her actions not only failed to protect her child but also contributed to an environment of fear and violence within the home.
A History of Abuse: A Pattern of Neglect and Cruelty
The relationship between Reid and Vargas, who have two children together, has been marked by a disturbing pattern of abuse and neglect. Reid, who had three children from a previous relationship, and Vargas, who entered the relationship with two children, including the young victim, had been together for several years. Despite their shared responsibilities as parents, their actions demonstrate a flagrant disregard for the well-being and safety of their children.
The victim’s ordeal is a heartbreaking reminder of the vulnerable position children can find themselves in when those entrusted with their care fail to protect them. The boy’s injuries and the psychological trauma he has endured are a testament to the enduring impact of such abuse. His three-week hospital stay, the use of feeding tubes, and the prolonged need for a cervical collar highlight the severity of the physical harm inflicted upon him. Equally alarming is the emotional toll such abuse takes on a child, leaving scars that can last a lifetime.
Legal Consequences: Justice Sought for the Victim
Both Reid and Vargas are now facing serious charges for their roles in the abuse. Reid, who was indicted by a grand jury, is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, intimidating a witness, obstructing governmental administration, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison. Vargas is charged with second-degree assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and obstructing governmental administration. She faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
The legal system has taken a firm stance in this case, with Reid being held without bail and Vargas being held on $250,000 bail or $500,000 bond. Both are expected to return to court in April 2024. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz has condemned the actions of both defendants, calling their behavior “unspeakable cruelty.” Katz emphasized the brutal nature of the crimes, noting that the child was not only beaten repeatedly but also humiliated by being forced to lick his own vomit. She also expressed relief that the victim and his siblings are now safe and vowed to seek justice for the child.
A Call for Justice: Ensuring Accountability and Protection
The case of Davien Reid and Dayanara Vargas serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and accountability in protecting vulnerable children. The allegations against this couple are a tragic example of how children can suffer at the hands of those who are supposed to love and protect them. The physical and emotional scars left on this young boy are a sobering reminder of the consequences of unchecked abuse and the importance of ensuring that children are safe from harm.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it is crucial that justice is served not only for the victim but also as a deterrent to others who would inflict such cruelty on innocent children. The courage of the young victim and the dedication of law enforcement and child protection agencies are essential in bringing perpetrators to justice and ensuring that such atrocities are not swept under the rug.
This case also raises important questions about the systems in place to protect children and the need for greater awareness and intervention in cases of suspected abuse. It is only through collective efforts that we can hope to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future and ensure that every child is afforded the safety, love, and protection they deserve.
