China urges end to ‘illegal’ sanctions as it hosts Iran nuclear talks

"Peaceful" Nuclear Programme: A Focus on Diplomacy and Cooperation
Iran’s Commitment to Peaceful Nuclear Goals
The Iranian nuclear programme has consistently been a subject of international attention, with Iran repeatedly emphasizing its peaceful nature. Gharibabadi, an Iranian official, recently reaffirmed this stance during constructive talks held in Beijing. He stated unequivocally, "The Iranian nuclear programme is peaceful in nature," and added, "Our nuclear programme has never been diverted to non-peaceful purposes." This assertion underscores Iran’s long-standing position that its nuclear activities are solely for civilian purposes, such as energy production and medical research. However, Gharibabadi also pointed out that certain countries have been attempting to create unnecessary tension and crisis surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, which he believes is unfounded.
China’s Role in Promoting Diplomatic Engagement
The discussions in Beijing were not limited to Iran’s nuclear programme but also touched on broader issues of mutual concern. The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials from Russia, Iran, and China, including China’s Vice Foreign Minister, Ma Zhaoxu. Following the meeting, Ma reiterated China’s commitment to resolving the Iran nuclear issue through "political and diplomatic engagement and dialogue based on mutual respect." He emphasized the importance of ending illegal, unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran, which he believes are a significant obstacle to progress. Ma called on all relevant parties to work towards eliminating the root causes of the current tensions and to abandon the use of sanctions, pressure, and threats of force. This approach reflects China’s consistent stance on promoting diplomacy over confrontation in addressing international disputes.
A Successful Meeting with Positive Outcomes
The trilateral meeting between Russian, Iranian, and Chinese officials was deemed a "complete success" by Iran’s ambassador to China, who shared his optimism on the social media platform X. The discussions resulted in important agreements on trilateral cooperation, particularly in addressing the challenges posed by US sanctions. The ambassador highlighted the significance of this cooperation, noting that the three nations had pledged to work together on key international issues. This collaboration is seen as a constructive step towards countering the unilateral measures imposed by the United States, which have had far-reaching impacts on Iran’s economy and international relations.
The Root Cause of the Current Crisis
Gharibabadi also addressed the underlying reasons for the current tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme. He pointed to the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, as the primary cause of the crisis. The US withdrawal in 2018 led to the reimposition of harsh sanctions on Iran, which severely affected its economy and destabilized the region. Gharibabadi emphasized that the current situation could have been avoided if the US had remained committed to the agreement and honoured its obligations. He reiterated that Iran has always adhered to the terms of the JCPOA and has not diverted its nuclear programme to non-peaceful purposes, as verified by international inspectors.
Looking Ahead: Trilateral Cooperation and Mutual Support
The successful meeting in Beijing highlights the growing importance of trilateral cooperation between Russia, China, and Iran in addressing common challenges. The three nations have agreed to work together to counter the effects of US sanctions and to promote stability in the region. This cooperation is not limited to the nuclear issue but extends to other areas of mutual concern, including trade, security, and global governance. By strengthening their collaboration, the three countries aim to create a more balanced and equitable international order, one that is less dominated by unilateral actions and more focused on multilateral dialogue and cooperation.
The Way Forward: Diplomacy and Mutual Respect
As the international community continues to grapple with the complexities of the Iran nuclear issue, the outcome of the Beijing talks offers a glimmer of hope. The emphasis on diplomacy, mutual respect, and cooperation reflects a shared commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means. While challenges remain, the success of the trilateral meeting demonstrates that dialogue and engagement can yield positive results. Moving forward, it will be crucial for all parties involved to maintain this momentum and to work towards a comprehensive solution that addresses the root causes of the crisis. By doing so, they can help pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future for the region and the world at large.
