AI use at work: Which are the most sceptical countries in Europe?

Mixed Feelings: Optimism and Anxiety Among EU Workers
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into workplaces across the European Union has sparked a complex mix of emotions among workers. On one hand, there is a sense of optimism regarding the benefits AI brings, such as increased efficiency and improved safety. However, this optimism is overshadowed by a lingering anxiety about the potential threat AI poses to job security. The Eurobarometer survey reveals that a significant majority of EU workers, 66%, view AI and digital technologies as beneficial to their jobs. On the flip side, 21% express concerns that AI might negatively impact their roles. This dichotomy highlights the dual nature of technological advancements, where progress and apprehension go hand in hand.
Positive Perceptions: AI’s Growing Presence in the EU Workplace
The survey underscores the varying levels of optimism across different EU countries. Malta, Sweden, and Lithuania emerge as the most positive, with 85%, 78%, and 76% of their workers respectively viewing AI favorably. These nations seem to embrace the potential of AI to enhance work processes. In contrast, countries like Romania, Italy, and Portugal exhibit higher skepticism, with only 32%, 25%, and 24% respectively viewing AI positively. Interestingly, these nations also report lower proficiency levels in AI skills, suggesting a possible correlation between familiarity and acceptance of new technologies.
The Role of AI in the Workplace: Perspectives on Its Use
When it comes to the application of AI, EU workers have clear preferences. A significant majority, 67%, believe AI should primarily be used to enhance workplace safety. However, there is less enthusiasm for using AI in more direct human resource functions, such as performance assessment, monitoring, or even the automation of firing decisions. Notably, Poland stands out with 33% of its workers supporting the use of AI for firing, indicating a cultural acceptance of technological intervention in employment
