Karissa Rund’s life was a testament to resilience and grace in the face of adversity. At the age of 40, she left an indelible mark on the world, inspiring countless individuals with her courage and unwavering faith. Her journey began with profound loss when she lost her mother to breast cancer at just 11 years old. This tragedy, however, was only the beginning of a series of challenges that would define her life.
Karissa’s teenage years were marred by yet another unimaginable tragedy. At 14, she survived the harrowing Columbine High School shooting, an event that would leave a lasting impact on her life. As she navigated her way through grief and trauma, she found solace in her faith and a determination to make a difference. Her resilience was further tested when, at 20, she became a war widow after her high school sweetheart, Greg Rund, was killed in action in Iraq. This loss, though devastating, did not break her spirit; instead, it galvanized her resolve to live a life of purpose.
Karissa’s professional journey was a reflection of her commitment to service. She built a distinguished career in civil service, working as a speechwriter and public affairs specialist for the Department of Energy, FEMA, and the Department of Homeland Security. Her work was not just a career but a calling, driven by a desire to serve and impact lives. As her health began to decline, she transitioned her passion into a nonprofit ministry, dedicated to aiding and inspiring those in need. Through this ministry, she reached hearts across the nation, offering hope and comfort until her physical limitations no longer allowed her to continue.
Karissa’s battle with Stage IV colon cancer, diagnosed at 31, was another chapter in her life of unwavering strength. Over a decade, she endured nine surgeries and two years of chemotherapy, yet her spirit remained unbroken. Her husband, Doug Rund, stood by her side, providing selfless care and unwavering support. Their bond was a testament to the power of love and partnership, even in the face of immense challenge.
Throughout her journey, Karissa’s faith was her anchor. She often spoke of her mission to serve others, to be a light in darkness, and to proclaim hope despite suffering. Her legacy is one of profound impact, touching countless lives through her ministry and her unwavering optimism. She was more than a survivor; she was a source of inspiration, a reminder of the strength found in faith and service.
Karissa Rund’s life was a beautiful tapestry of resilience, love, and service. Though her time on this earth was cut short, her legacy endures.
