Britain’s oldest nurse wins gold at social care awards at 84

At 84, Britain’s oldest working nurse, Daisy Richards, has clinched top honors at the Wales Care Awards, winning gold for Dignity in Care and bronze for Outstanding Service.

First qualified in 1958, Daisy continues her inspiring work at Fairways Newydd Nursing and Dementia Care Home in Llanfairpwll, Anglesey, where she often cares for patients younger than herself, as reported by VKNews24.

Reflecting on her double award win, Daisy expressed surprise and humility. “I’m still in shock,” she said. “I go to work, do my best, and I enjoy every day with my dementia patients.

Age really is just a number.” Known for her dedication, she’s already looking forward to her nursing revalidation next year, demonstrating her commitment to remaining an active, registered nurse.

Daisy’s manager, Rebekah Charles, who nominated her, praised her as “humble” and “dedicated,” noting that Daisy’s approach embodies the values of an old-school matron, prioritizing exceptional care and organization.

Daisy’s career spans nearly five decades, beginning at Epsom District Hospital and later Bangor Hospital after moving to Anglesey in 1972, where she expanded her healthcare expertise.

Mario Kreft, chairman of Care Forum Wales, commended the outstanding level of entrants, celebrating each finalist as a “winner” and a “role model.”
