Nicolas Cage Attends ‘The Surfer’ Premiere After Being Dismissed From His Ex’s Assault Lawsuit

Nicolas Cage’s Premiere Appearance Amid Legal Developments
Nicolas Cage made a stylish appearance at the premiere of his latest film, The Surfer, in Austin, Texas, on Monday, March 10. The 62-year-old actor, known for his versatile roles and unforgettable performances, stepped onto the red carpet dressed in a sparkly black suit, a black fedora, and rose-colored sunglasses. His new film, a psychological thriller set to release on May 2, follows a man who engages in a battle with a gang of surfers over control of a secluded Australian beach. While the event marked an exciting milestone in Cage’s career, it also coincided with significant legal developments involving his ex-partner, Christina Fulton, who recently dismissed her assault lawsuit against him.
Dismissal of Christina Fulton’s Assault Lawsuit
Court documents obtained by Us Weekly revealed that Christina Fulton’s lawsuit against Nicolas Cage was dismissed in its entirety on March 7, three days before the premiere. The dismissal was made "with prejudice," meaning Fulton cannot refile the case. Fulton, 57, had filed the lawsuit in February, alleging that Cage was partially responsible for a physical altercation involving their son, Weston Cage, 34. The incident reportedly occurred in April 2024, during which Fulton claimed to have suffered injuries while trying to intervene in a mental health crisis involving Weston. Despite her efforts to seek help, Fulton alleged that Cage failed to address their son’s mental health concerns and enable his "reckless" behavior.
Fulton’s Allegations Against Cage
In her lawsuit, Fulton outlined Weston’s history of mental health issues and violent behavior, accusing Cage of ignoring the warning signs and enabling their son’s actions. According to court filings, Weston has a documented history of mental instability, substance abuse, and violent assaults, which Fulton claims Cage was aware of. She alleged that Cage had financially supported Weston by bailing him out of jail on multiple occasions and paying the rent for his Los Angeles condo. Fulton argued that Cage’s actions allowed Weston to continue his "reckless" lifestyle without seeking necessary psychiatric help. “Nicolas knew or should have known that Weston posed a serious and imminent danger to others, including Plaintiff, based on his documented history of violent assaults, substance abuse, and mental instability,” the lawsuit stated.
Nicolas Cage’s Response to the Allegations
Nicolas Cage has denied Fulton’s allegations, calling them "absurd and frivolous" in a statement to Us Weekly. He emphasized that he does not control Weston’s behavior and is not responsible for the alleged assault on his mother. Cage’s statement reflects his stance on the matter, maintaining that Weston, now 34, is an adult capable of making his own decisions. “Weston Coppola is a 34-year-old man. Mr. Cage does not control Weston’s behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother,” Cage said. Despite his denial, the situation has brought attention to Cage’s role as a father and his relationship with his children.
Fulton’s Account of the Incident
Christina Fulton provided a detailed account of the April 2024 incident in an interview with Us Weekly in July 2024. She described how she received urgent messages from Weston’s friends about his deteriorating mental state. When she arrived to help, she found Weston in a manic rage. Fulton claimed that she was “brutally assaulted” during the altercation and sustained serious injuries. She recalled pleading with responding police officers to detain Weston for a mental health evaluation, but her requests were ignored. Fulton expressed frustration over the lack of support from authorities, stating that her urgent need for medical attention was neglected. The incident has had lasting emotional and physical effects on Fulton, who has been vocal about her concerns regarding Weston’s well-being and Cage’s involvement.
A Family in Crisis
The legal developments and emotional accounts highlight the complex dynamics of Nicolas Cage’s family life. Cage and Fulton welcomed Weston in December 1990 but split shortly after. While Cage has moved on to build a life with his other children—he has a son, Kal-El, with his ex-wife Alice Kim, and a daughter, August, with his current wife, Riko Shibata—Fulton has been vocal about her struggles as a mother to Weston. The situation underscores the challenges parents face when dealing with adult children grappling with mental health issues and legal troubles. As Cage continues to focus on his career, the dismissal of Fulton’s lawsuit brings some resolution to the legal battle, but the underlying issues remain a sensitive and unresolved chapter in their family’s history.
