Former UN Commissioner Robinson Addresses Climate Change and Human Rights

Mary Robinson and the Fight for Global Justice
Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, delivered a powerful speech at Florida State University, emphasizing the critical role of the rule of law in addressing global crises. As part of a lecture series on international human rights, Robinson addressed 800 students and alumni, underscoring the importance of upholding legal principles in a world grappling with conflicts and climate change.
The Erosion of the Rule of Law
Robinson expressed dismay at the weakening of the rule of law, particularly in the U.S., where political actions have undermined its global standing. She highlighted a 2023 World Justice Report indicating that 6 billion people now live in countries where the rule of law has deteriorated. This erosion is evident in declining civic participation, freedom of assembly, and expression, threatening global stability and human rights.
Human Rights in Times of War
Drawing from her experience post-9/11, Robinson criticized the U.S. for actions like withdrawing from the Rome Statute and the invasion of Iraq without UN approval. She addressed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Gaza conflict, emphasizing the need for accountability. Robinson noted the ICJ’s opinion on Israel’s occupation but lamented the lack of decisive UN action, highlighting perceptions of double standards in international law.
Climate Change and Legal Innovation
Robinson explored climate change as a human rights issue, citing legal developments like the European Court of Human Rights recognizing a right to a healthy environment. She discussed the role of youth activists and the rise of climate litigation, holding governments and corporations accountable. However, she also noted resistance from powerful interests against ESG principles and climate obligations.
Youth Leadership in Global Activism
Young activists, including Greta Thunberg, are at the forefront of climate action, challenging authorities and corporations in court. Robinson lauded their efforts, noting the influence of their advocacy on legal frameworks. The inclusion of youth in the 2024 UN Summit on the Future underscores their crucial role inREVITALizing global agendas and fostering intergenerational equity.
A Call to Action for Global Unity
Robinson concluded with a call for collective action, urging leaders to prioritize human rights and the rule of law. She emphasized the need for an inclusive, rights-oriented approach to address climate change and global security. In the face of adversity, she invoked Nelson Mandela’s wisdom, reminding us that even the Impossible becomes achievable with determination and unity. Robinson’s speech was a testament to the enduring power of justice and compassion in shaping a better world.
