Changzhou City, a major hub for international smart manufacturing in China’s Jiangsu Province, has announced a series of significant investment opportunities aimed at global investors. These opportunities were presented during the 2024 New Energy Industry Development Conference and Invest in Changzhou Conference, held on 19 September.
The city is seeking to attract foreign investment in nine key areas, including synthetic biology, the low-altitude economy, intelligent connected new energy vehicles, solid-state batteries, hydrogen energy, third-generation semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. This wide range of sectors reflects Changzhou’s ambition to establish itself as a leader in developing advanced technologies and to further integrate into the global economy.
Located at the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, Changzhou has become a prominent base for advanced manufacturing in China. In recent years, the city has made significant strides in fostering the new energy industry and enhancing its high-quality productive forces. The added value of Changzhou’s industrial sector has exceeded two trillion yuan, with manufacturing contributing approximately 43% of this figure. These figures place the city among the top three in Jiangsu Province for industrial development.
Changzhou’s status as a leader in new energy has been highlighted in the “Hurun China New Energy Cities 2024” list, which was released by the Hurun Research Institute at the conference. The city has ranked first in terms of investment attractiveness and concentration for three consecutive years, reinforcing its position as a key destination for new energy investments in China.
Since 2020, Changzhou has attracted a total of $10.59 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI), equivalent to nearly 74.25 billion yuan. Major foreign projects have already begun operations in the city, including ArcelorMittal’s soft magnetism project and BIOS, a Hong Kong-based medical device manufacturer. These projects underline Changzhou’s growing appeal to multinational corporations seeking to expand their presence in China’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape.
At the conference, city officials also launched a new multilingual guide aimed at assisting foreign nationals residing in Changzhou. This guide provides practical information on a variety of services, including residence and work permits, and convenient payment options. The initiative is part of Changzhou’s broader efforts to create a more open and internationally welcoming environment, facilitating the integration of foreign talent and investors into the local community.
Changzhou’s push for investment in cutting-edge industries aligns with its long-term strategy of fostering innovation and sustainable growth. By focusing on emerging sectors such as solid-state batteries and hydrogen energy, the city hopes to cement its position as a global leader in the green energy revolution.
The 2024 New Energy Industry Development Conference also served as a platform for networking and collaboration, offering global investors insight into Changzhou’s business environment and its potential for future growth. The city’s continued focus on new energy and advanced manufacturing promises to deliver long-term economic benefits for both local industries and international investors alike.
