ZTE Corporation, a leading provider of integrated information and communication technology solutions, has announced a significant breakthrough in network technology with the successful completion of the world’s first live test of 1.2 Terabits per second (Tbps) single-wavelength transmission. This pioneering test, conducted in collaboration with Turkcell, a major telecommunications operator in Turkey, utilises an 800 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) client interface and marks a notable advancement in optical transmission technology.
As demand for network capacity surges due to the rise of services such as cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI), Turkcell has committed to enhancing its network capabilities. The collaboration with ZTE has enabled the testing of ultra-high-speed Optical Transport Network (OTN) transmission, featuring both 400GE and 800GE client interfaces alongside a 1.2 Tbps line-board. This innovative solution offers dual 400GE and 800GE client interfaces, providing flexibility to accommodate a variety of operational scenarios.
Compared to traditional 400G solutions, the new 1.2 Tbps transmission system offers significantly higher bandwidth and transmission rates, which can greatly enhance overall system capacity. Additionally, this cutting-edge solution has the potential to support future network advancements, enabling speeds of up to 1.6 Tbps.
ZTE remains dedicated to the development of next-generation Tbit OTN solutions and is committed to supporting global operators in their commercial deployments. This focus on advancing ultra-wide digital optical networks is part of ZTE’s broader strategy to facilitate technological progress in the telecommunications sector.
Prof. Dr. Vehbi Çağrı Güngör, Chief Network Technologies Officer at Turkcell, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, “On our 30th anniversary, we proudly and honorably celebrate our leadership in technology as Turkcell. We are committed to meeting the ever-increasing capacity demands with 1.2 Terabit speeds and the use of 800GE + 400GE interfaces together within this huge capacity. From this perspective, we will continue to lead the industry through our technological collaboration with ZTE.”
Peng Aiguang, Senior Vice President of ZTE and Chairman of Netaş, highlighted the importance of the collaboration, noting, “Today, we jointly witnessed the collaboration between ZTE and Turkcell. This achievement not only showcases Turkcell’s determination and foresight in exploring new technologies, but also reflects ZTE’s nearly 30 years of extensive experience in optical transmission. Turkcell stands out as one of ZTE’s pivotal global partners.”
As Turkcell celebrates its 30th anniversary, the successful test of the 1.2 Tbps transmission system represents a significant milestone in the company’s history of leveraging advanced technology to improve user experiences. Looking ahead, ZTE plans to increase its research and development investment, focusing on breakthroughs in key technologies and providing innovative solutions to support Turkcell in maintaining its position as a leader in the global telecommunications industry. This collaboration exemplifies the ongoing drive towards technological advancements in network capacity and performance, paving the way for future innovations in the sector.
