The UK government has taken a significant step toward addressing the growing issue of spiking, announcing that it will become a criminal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison under a new law. This measure is part of the upcoming Crime and Policing Bill, which is set to be introduced in parliament next week. The move comes as part of a broader effort to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly women and girls, and to ensure public safety. Alongside the new legislation, the government has also launched a nationwide training program aimed at equipping workers in pubs, clubs, and bars with the skills to identify and prevent spiking incidents.

The announcement has been met with widespread support, as spiking continues to be a pervasive and deeply concerning issue across the country. According to recent data, police in England and Wales received 6,732 reports of spiking in the year leading up to April 2023, with 957 of these cases involving needle spiking. In London alone, the Metropolitan Police reported a 13% increase in spiking allegations in 2023, highlighting the urgent need for action.
