Starmer pays tribute to ‘sacrifice’ of UK armed forces after Vance’s ‘British troops’ comments

Sir Keir Starmer has paid tribute to the “sacrifice” of the UK’s armed forces after US vice president JD Vance was accused of “disrespecting” British troops. During Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, Sir Keir highlighted that Thursday marked 13 years since six young British soldiers died while on patrol in Afghanistan and 18 years since Royal Marine Benjamin Reddy was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He emphasized that 642 people died in Afghanistan and Iraq “fighting for Britain alongside our allies,” adding, “We will never forget their bravery and their sacrifice.”

His remarks were made as tensions arose following comments by Mr. Vance, who suggested that a potential peacekeeping force in Ukraine would consist of “20,000 troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years.” The UK and France are the only countries to have pledged troops to such a force. Although Mr. Vance later dismissed the notion that he was referring to these two allies as “absurdly dishonest,” the comments sparked criticism.

Sir Keir’s spokesman stated that it was “totally legitimate” for him to pay tribute to soldiers ahead of the anniversary of their deaths, adding, “You can draw your own conclusions.” Liberal Democrat MP and former British Army officer Richard Foord was more direct, criticizing Mr. Vance and calling for more respect for those who lost their lives. Sir Keir emphasized the importance of remembering the UK’s historical role alongside its allies and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Sir Keir also addressed the need for collaboration between the US, Europe, and Ukraine to achieve lasting peace, mentioning his recent communication with President Zelenskyy. He reiterated the UK’s commitment to security guarantees, referencing President Zelenskyy’s assurance of support under NATO’s Article 5.
