CJ Gardner-Johnson shares appreciation for Eagles amid reported trade to Texans: ‘I love you Philly’

C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s Departure from the Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive lineup has undergone another significant change with the recent trade involving C.J. Gardner-Johnson. On Tuesday, multiple reports confirmed that Gardner-Johnson, the versatile defensive back, was traded to the Houston Texans. In exchange for his services, the Eagles received offensive lineman Kenyon Green, a 2026 fifth-round draft pick, and a future sixth-round pick. This move marks the end of Gardner-Johnson’s second stint with the Eagles, a period that saw him become an integral part of their vaunted defense.
A Key Player’s Journey and Contributions
C.J. Gardner-Johnson first joined the Eagles in 2022 and quickly established himself as a key contributor to the team’s defensive success. His initial season with the Eagles was impactful, leading to a brief departure to the Detroit Lions for the 2023 campaign. However, he returned to Philadelphia last year, signing a three-year deal. During his second tenure, Gardner-Johnson was a standout player, finishing the 2024 season with six interceptions, a feat he also achieved two seasons prior. His performance was instrumental in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory, where he recorded three tackles in the 40-22 triumph over the Kansas City Chiefs.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
Despite his success on the field, Gardner-Johnson’s relationship with the Eagles’ fanbase has been somewhat turbulent. Shortly after his first stint ended, he made headlines by describing some Philadelphia residents as “obnoxious” during a Twitch live stream in 2023. He did, however, express appreciation for the city’s weather. More recently, Gardner-Johnson took to social media to express his love for Philadelphia, stating, “I love you Philly, we forever champions,” suggesting that the city and team will always hold a special place in his heart.
Off-Field Controversies and Their Fallout
Gardner-Johnson’s tenure was not without controversy. Following the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory, he sparked outrage with a social media post targeting Travis Kelce and, by extension, Taylor Swift, Kelce’s romantic partner. The vulgar caption and his subsequent choice of attire at the victory parade—a hoodie reading, “Swifties can LIX my b—-”— drew significant backlash. This backlash extended beyond the football field, affecting a Florida restaurant owned by his mother, Del Johnson. The establishment, Kings Grill, received a wave of negative Yelp reviews, primarily from Swift’s fanbase, known as “Swifties.” Yelp eventually intervened, placing an “unusual activity alert” on the restaurant’s page to halt further negative reviews.
The Eagles’ Offseason Moves
While the Eagles have parted ways with Gardner-Johnson, they have been active in reshaping their roster. The team managed to retain linebacker Zack Baun but saw defensive ends Josh Sweat and Milton Williams agree to deals with other teams. Additionally, defensive backs Darius Slay and James Bradberry were released, signaling a defensive overhaul. On the offensive side, the Eagles addressed their backup quarterback needs by trading Kenny Pickett to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Looking Ahead for the Eagles
As the Eagles continue to navigate their offseason, the departure of C.J. Gardner-Johnson serves as a reminder of the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of the NFL. While his contributions were significant, the team appears focused on retooling their defense and addressing other roster needs. The decision to trade Gardner-Johnson, despite his impact, underscores the Eagles’ commitment to building a competitive roster for future success. As the season approaches, fans will closely watch how these moves shape the team’s performance on the field.
