Ford Tested Its Gen 2 NACS Adapter by Running It Over With an F-150

Enhancing Electric Vehicle Charging Accessibility: Ford’s Integration with Tesla’s Supercharger Network
A Year of Innovation and Expansion
Ford marks a significant milestone as it completes one year since its electric vehicles (EVs) first accessed Tesla’s Supercharger network using NACS Fast Charging Adapters. This anniversary is celebrated with the introduction of new features: NACS Fast Charger Routing via Apple Maps in CarPlay and a second-generation adapter for the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E. These enhancements promise a more seamless and reliable charging experience, reflecting Ford’s commitment to advancing EV infrastructure.
Commitment to NACS and Customer Satisfaction
In 2023, Ford led the automotive industry by supporting the North American Charging System (NACS), followed by the distribution of complimentary adapters to reservation holders in 2024. Over 140,000 adapters have been shipped, with 20% of Ford EV charging sessions outside the home occurring at Tesla stations. This demonstrates Ford’s dedication to customer satisfaction and the effectiveness of their adaptive strategy in the EV market.
Expanded Charging Network and Navigation
Ford’s integration with Tesla’s V3 Superchargers has expanded the BlueOval Charge Network to 44,000 DC fast charging points across North America. Drivers can now navigate to these stations using FordPass, onboard systems, and Apple Maps, enhancing the overall user experience, especially during long trips, where connectivity and convenience are paramount.
Advanced Route Planning with Apple Maps
Apple Maps now includes NACS stations in route planning, detecting the vehicle’s state of charge to suggest charging stops, complete with reminders to carry the adapter. While battery preconditioning isn’t supported due to Apple’s system, this feature represents a significant step in integrating Apple’s technology with Ford’s EV capabilities, simplifying journey planning for users.
Next-Generation Adapter: Durability and Design
The second-generation NACS adapter, developed with Lectron, is built for resilience and ease of use. Tested under extreme conditions, it features an ergonomic design and a lower price point, showcasing Ford’s focus on both durability and affordability. This adapter exemplifies Ford’s commitment to enhancing user convenience while ensuring reliability.
Future of EV Charging and User-Centric Innovations
Ford’s continuous efforts to integrate advanced charging solutions underscore a customer-centric approach, aiming to make EV adoption more accessible. By addressing the practical needs of EV owners, Ford not only improves the user experience but also paves the way for a more sustainable transportation future. These innovations highlight Ford’s pivotal role in shaping the EV landscape.
