Cops Stop Festive Driver for Decking Car with Christmas Lights

A driver in Wrexham found himself in a festive debacle after being pulled over for adorning his Volkswagen Golf with Christmas lights affixed using Sellotape.

The motorist, clearly embracing the holiday spirit, had invested hours decking out his vehicle in seasonal decorations, only to face disappointment when police deemed the setup unsafe.

Officers from the North Wales Road Policing Unit stopped the car on November 29, citing safety concerns over the makeshift makeover.

While the decorations might have been an eye-catching display of holiday cheer, authorities were less than impressed, highlighting the potential hazards posed to other road users.

The driver, who was reportedly not thrilled about being asked to dismantle his efforts, received what police described as “strong words of advice.”

In a statement, North Wales Police expressed their fondness for festive celebrations but stressed that road safety must take precedence.

“We all love a bit of the festivities here in the Roads Crime Unit,” they noted.

“However, we advise that you keep your Christmas tree lights on your Christmas tree and not on your car.

It is not legal.

It is not safe.

It causes distractions to other road users, it could cause injury, and worst of all, they were stuck on with Sellotape.”

The incident sparked a mix of amusement and critique online.

Social media users weighed in with their opinions, ranging from humorous jabs at the driver’s taste to debates about fairness in traffic rules.

One commenter, Ben Davey, quipped, “Should be illegal in aspects of taste also.”

Another, Kate Lacey, speculated the inspiration might have come from TikTok, remarking, “Though the one I saw used duct tape at least.”

Not everyone was in agreement with the police’s actions.

Some compared the festive lights to official emergency vehicle lighting, with Paul Elliott commenting, “But it’s ok for the police to blind drivers with their excessive amount of white LED lights.”

Similarly, Paul Evans-Dunne questioned, “But big blue flashing lights all over a car is fine?”

Despite the mixed reactions, police reiterated their stance on safety, reminding drivers to leave festive embellishments off their vehicles.

The message was clear: enjoy the holiday season, but keep the decorations confined to your home, not the highway.
