The visualization, created with input from sleep expert Dr.
Sophie Bostock, depicts a hypothetical person suffering severe physical and mental effects from chronic sleep deprivation—and the results are alarming.

Hannah is imagined as a red-eyed, balding figure with wrinkled skin, swollen limbs, a bloated stomach, and multiple skin conditions, including jaundice.
Her physique also shows muscle atrophy, with her arms and legs appearing shrunken and weak.
This visual, based on scientific research, illustrates the toll poor sleeping habits could take on the human body if the UK’s growing sleep deficit remains unchecked.
Dr. Bostock warns that Britain is in the grips of a “tiredness epidemic,” citing new data that reveals the average Brit gets just six hours and 24 minutes of sleep per night—well below the recommended amount.
This widespread sleep deprivation not only affects physical health but also poses risks to mental wellbeing.
For instance, Hannah’s model highlights cognitive issues such as short-term memory loss and heightened sensitivity to pain.
Chronic fatigue also weakens the immune system, leaving her more susceptible to respiratory infections like colds and flu.
One of the most jarring aspects of the model is its depiction of how lack of sleep disrupts hormonal balance.

Hannah’s design is grounded in findings from academic studies published since 2010, which detail the impacts of poor sleep on various systems, including the brain, skin, immune system, and muscles.
Bensons for Beds aimed to make this health crisis more relatable by commissioning the visual representation.
Marketing Director Lisa Richards described Hannah as a “worst-case scenario” that shows what could happen when poor sleep habits and inadequate mattress support persist over time.
She noted that while Hannah doesn’t represent every Brit, the model is intended to raise awareness about the long-term consequences of neglecting sleep.
To avoid similar outcomes, experts recommend several strategies for improving sleep quality.
These include maintaining consistent wake-up times, seeking natural light during the day, exercising regularly, avoiding screens before bed, eating well in advance of bedtime, and ensuring your mattress provides adequate support.
By adopting these habits, individuals can safeguard their health and sidestep the grim fate envisioned by Hannah’s creators.
