UK weather: Warm weekend brings 20C temperatures – hotter than Spain and Italy

A Weekend of Unseasonable Warmth Across the UK
This weekend, parts of the UK are set to experience unseasonably warm weather, with temperatures soaring higher than usual for this time of year. Central England, in particular, is expected to reach a balmy 20°C on Sunday, marking the highest temperatures the country has seen so far this year. Even regions like East Anglia, northwest England, the north Midlands, and North Wales are expected to bask in temperatures of 18-19°C on Saturday, which is above average for early spring. residents are encouraged to make the most of these sunny days, as the warmth is expected to be short-lived.
Holiday Hotspots Left in the Shade
Interestingly, this weekend’s UK weather will outshine some of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. For instance, Marbella on Spain’s Costa del Sol is only expected to reach a high of 15°C, while Ibiza and Sorrento on Italy’s Amalfi Coast will see maximums of 17°C and 18°C, respectively. This rare reversal has left many Brits wondering if they even need to jet off to southern Europe for a taste of sunshine. Sky News meteorologist Chris England notes, however, that this warm spell is not here to stay, with cooler conditions expected to return by Monday.
A Few Exceptions to the Fine Weather
While much of the UK will enjoy a "fine and sunny" weekend, as described by Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell, there are a few exceptions. The far north of Scotland will experience slightly cooler and cloudier conditions, though it will still remain generally dry and sunny. For most of the country, however, the forecast promises clear skies and pleasant temperatures, making it an ideal time to get outdoors and enjoy nature.
The Cold Snap That Follows
The warm weekend will be short-lived, as a significant change in weather is expected to sweep across the UK early next week. A spell of rain will move southward, bringing wintry showers to the North and North East. By Wednesday, the UK will experience colder temperatures, with rural areas in Scotland potentially plummeting as low as -4°C. Daytime temperatures will struggle to rise above 5-8°C, marking a stark contrast to the mild weekend.
Wintry Showers and Below-Average Temperatures
Deputy chief meteorologist Chris Bulmer warns that while the extent of the rain and wintry showers is still uncertain, there is a high confidence that temperatures will remain below average throughout the week. This colder snap will bring a very different feel to the country compared to the mild and sunny weekend, reminding everyone that winter is not quite ready to let go just yet.
A Tale of Two Weather Extremes
In summary, the UK is set for a dramatic yo-yo of weather conditions. This weekend, many parts of the country will bask in unseasonable warmth, with temperatures higher than some of Europe’s sunniest holiday spots. However, by early next week, the weather will take a turn for the worse, with rain, wintry showers, and plunging temperatures returning. It’s a reminder of the unpredictable nature of British weather and the importance of making the most of the sunny days while they last.
