Archaeologists Discover Gold Tongues and Nails in Ancient Egyptian Tomb
Archaeologists uncover golden tongues, nails, and ancient deities’ artifacts in an Egyptian tomb, revealing secrets of Ptolemaic-era rituals and the quest for the afterlife.
Archaeologists have uncovered an extraordinary collection of artifacts, including tongues and nails made of gold, within an ancient Egyptian tomb.
The remarkable discoveries were made at the Al-Bahnasa archaeological site in Minya Governorate, an area steeped in historical significance.
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities revealed the find in a Facebook announcement on December 14.

Experts believe these artifacts date back to the Ptolemaic era, a period when Macedonian Greeks ruled Egypt from 305 BC to 30 BC.
This region was once part of Oxyrhynchus, a prominent city during ancient Egypt’s Greco-Roman period, as noted by reports from vknews24.
The ministry’s press release, translated into English, detailed a variety of treasures uncovered in the tombs.
These included 13 golden tongues, amulets, and jars adorned with depictions of deities such as Ra, Isis, Horus, and Osiris.
While rare, golden tongues have been found at other sites in Egypt.
Scholars suggest that the ancient Egyptians used these to equip the deceased for communication with Osiris, the god of the underworld, thereby aiding their passage into the afterlife.
The tombs also revealed vivid inscriptions and engravings depicting ritualistic scenes.
These artistic remnants shed light on the funerary customs and beliefs of the time.
The archaeological team, co-led by Spanish experts Esther Pons Mellado and Maite Mascort, highlighted the spiritual significance of the golden tongues.
According to them, the golden adornments were intended to preserve the body’s functions for the afterlife and maintain its integrity.
They emphasized that for the ancient Egyptians, gold symbolized the divine essence, being considered the flesh of the gods.
This extraordinary discovery adds to the growing understanding of the rituals and symbolic practices of ancient Egyptian civilization.
