Rail system works on Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link 50% complete

An Overview of the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link Project
The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving cross-border connectivity between Malaysia and Singapore. The RTS Link is a 4-kilometer rail system that will connect Woodlands North station in Singapore to Bukit Chagar station in Johor Bahru. This project is a collaborative effort between the transport operators of both countries, with RTS Operations (RTSO) serving as the joint venture company overseeing its development. RTSO is a partnership between Prasarana Malaysia and Singapore’s SMRT Corporation, bringing together expertise and resources from both nations to ensure the project’s success.
The RTS Link is designed to alleviate the severe traffic congestion at the Causeway, one of the busiest border crossings in the world. By providing a reliable and efficient rail service, the RTS Link will significantly reduce travel time and inconvenience for the thousands of commuters who cross the border daily. The system is expected to transport up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, making it a vital solution to the region’s growing transportation needs.
Current Progress and Key Milestones
As of February 2023, the RTS Link project has reached approximately 50% completion. Significant progress has been made in critical areas such as track installation, signalling systems, and power supply. Track installation began in September 2022 from the Wadi Hana Depot in Johor Bahru and is on track to reach Woodlands North station by July 2023. This achievement marks a major milestone in the project’s timeline, demonstrating the commitment and efficiency of the teams involved.
The project’s system implementation phase is also progressing smoothly, with a strong focus on integrating critical systems such as trackwork, rolling stock (the trains), traction power, and signalling and control systems. According to RTSO Project Director Zahrin Abdul Gani, these components are essential for ensuring the seamless operation of the RTS Link once it becomes operational. The project is currently on schedule to begin service by the end of 2026, a timeline that reflects the collaborative efforts of both Malaysian and Singaporean teams.
The Benefits of the RTS Link
The RTS Link promises to bring numerous benefits to residents, commuters, and businesses on both sides of the border. By reducing congestion on the Causeway, the system will significantly cut down travel time, making cross-border commuting more convenient and efficient. This will not only improve the quality of life for thousands of people but also strengthen economic ties between Johor Bahru and Singapore.
The RTS Link is also expected to boost the regional economy by facilitating easier access to job opportunities, goods, and services. For businesses, the improved connectivity will mean faster and more reliable transportation of goods, enhancing trade and commerce between the two nations. Additionally, the project is expected to reduce the environmental impact of cross-border travel by providing a more sustainable alternative to private vehicular transport.
A Testament to Bilateral Collaboration
The RTS Link project is a shining example of effective bilateral collaboration between Malaysia and Singapore. The joint venture between Prasarana Malaysia and SMRT Corporation has brought together expertise, resources, and knowledge from both countries, ensuring that the project meets the highest standards of quality and efficiency.
In January 2023, the project received a symbolic boost when the then-Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, and Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, marked the completion of a 17.1-meter-long structure linking the marine viaducts of both countries. This ceremony underscored the importance of the project and the commitment of both nations to its successful completion.
Future Plans and Integration with Existing Networks
As the RTS Link progresses, plans are also underway to ensure its integration with existing public transport networks in both countries. On the Singaporean side, work to connect the RTS Link to the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) is scheduled to begin in 2025. This integration will provide commuters with seamless access to Singapore’s extensive public transport network, further enhancing the convenience of the RTS Link.
Similarly, in Johor Bahru, the RTS Link will be connected to the local public transport system, ensuring that residents and visitors can easily access key destinations within the city. The integration of the RTS Link with existing networks highlights the project’s potential to become a cornerstone of the region’s transportation infrastructure.
Managing Expectations and Looking Ahead
While excitement builds for the RTS Link’s completion, officials are managing expectations by keeping certain details under wraps until closer to the launch date. For instance, the fare structure for the RTS Link has not yet been disclosed. According to RTSO CEO Dr. Ahmad Marzuki Ariffin, the fares will be announced in due course, allowing sufficient time for commuters to plan their travel budgets.
As the project nears completion, the focus will remain on ensuring that all systems are thoroughly tested and integrated to provide a safe, reliable, and efficient service. The RTS Link represents more than just a new rail system; it symbolizes the strength of the partnership between Malaysia and Singapore and their shared vision for a more connected and sustainable future. With its expected completion in 2026, the RTS Link is set to transform cross-border travel and pave the way for even greater collaboration between the two nations.
