A baby dolphin entangled in fishing gear was rescued by quick-thinking coastguards off the coast of Sicily, Italy.

The young marine mammal was spotted struggling with a net and a buoy wrapped tightly around its tail, preventing it from swimming freely.

As the rescue team carefully approached, they managed to latch onto the tangled material, pulling the dolphin closer to their vessel.

Once the final strands were cut, the calf flicked its tail and swam straight back to its mother.

Initially, there were fears that some rope might still be attached, but as the video of the rescue unfolds, the young dolphin appears to be moving without any restrictions.

Reports suggest that in a heartwarming moment, the calf expressed its gratitude by performing a few joyful leaps and flips.

The rescue was carried out by the crew of patrol boat CP719 from Castellammare del Golfo, under the coordination of the Coastguard of Trapani.

The dramatic operation took place on Friday, January 24.
