‘Heartbreaking’: Bird flu concerns grow as 1st case in N.B. confirmed

Atlantic Wildlife Institute Reports First Bird Flu Case of 2025
A Heartbreaking Discovery in Shediac
The Atlantic Wildlife Institute (AWI) in New Brunswick has reported its first bird flu case of 2025, describing the situation as both "heartbreaking and worrisome." A red-breasted merganser, found ill in a backyard in Shediac last month, was brought to the AWI but unfortunately succumbed to its condition shortly after arrival. The institute emphasized that the bird was alive when it arrived but showed severe symptoms indicating a serious illness. Due to ongoing bio-security protocols, the merganser was immediately placed in quarantine, where it passed away a short time later.
Confirmation and Regional Spread
Tests conducted at the AWI revealed that the bird had avian flu, though final confirmation is pending from a national lab in Winnipeg. This case is not an isolated incident, as avian flu has also been detected in birds within neighboring provinces, including Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The AWI noted that this discovery coincided with a significant die-off of Canada Geese on Prince Edward Island, highlighting the growing concern over the spread of the virus in the region.
Bird Flu in Canada: A Growing Concern
Avian flu has been a persistent issue in Canada since 2021, leading to the culling of millions of chickens to curtail the spread of the virus. While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has assured that the risk to humans remains low, with no evidence of person-to-person transmission, the AWI is urging the public to exercise caution. The institute warns that the virus not only affects birds but also has the potential to infect mammals, as indicated by past cases.
Public Advisories and Safety Measures
The AWI has issued specific guidelines for individuals who encounter sick or deceased birds. They advise using gloves and disposable containers when handling such birds and emphasize the importance of thorough handwashing, as well as cleaning clothes, shoes, and vehicles afterward. Additionally, pet owners are reminded to protect their birds by keeping them indoors, under cover, and ensuring regular cleaning of their cages. The institute also encourages reporting any unusual bird deaths to local authorities to aid in controlling the spread of the virus.
Recognizing Symptoms and Taking Action
Birds infected with avian flu may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, difficulty standing, tremors, seizures, and breathing difficulties. The AWI underscored the importance of prompt action, stating that even though the red-breasted merganser could not be saved, its removal helped prevent further spread of the virus to other animals. By remaining vigilant and taking necessary precautions, the public can contribute to mitigating this health crisis.
A Call for Vigilance and Responsibility
As avian flu continues to affect bird populations across Canada, the AWI is urging everyone to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious cases. While the risk to human health is low, the potential impact on local wildlife and agriculture is significant. By following safety guidelines and supporting efforts to monitor and control the spread of the virus, the community can play a vital role in protecting both animal and environmental health.
This situation serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the importance of collective action in addressing health challenges affecting both wildlife and humans alike.
