Kelowna RCMP equip seniors with tools to protect themselves in wake of scam spike

Empowering Seniors Against Scams: A Community Efforts in Kelowna
Scams targeting seniors have seen a significant rise in Kelowna, with over a dozen reported incidents since January, resulting in financial losses nearing $40,000. Kelowna RCMP Const. Mike Della-Paolera highlights that scammers exploit current global events to deceive vulnerable populations, making it challenging for seniors to keep up with new tactics.
The Rising Threat of Scams Against Seniors
The increase in scams has been alarming, with many incidents likely going unreported due to victims’ embarrassment or fear. These scams are not just isolated events but part of a broader criminal industry that preys on seniors’ trust and goodwill, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to protect this demographic.
Community Initiative to Educate Seniors
In response, the Society of Hope, a nonprofit providing affordable housing, hosted a scam information session. This initiative aimed to arm seniors with knowledge to recognize and avoid scams. Executive Director Ken Zeitner noted that reducing stigma and fostering an open dialogue are crucial steps in helping seniors feel supported and informed.
Seniors Benefit from Awareness Session
Attendees found the session informative, with many expressing increased confidence in identifying scams. Cathy Landry and Winn Sherland shared their experiences, emphasizing vigilance and the importance of seeking advice before taking action. Such awareness is vital in empowering seniors to protect themselves.
RCMP’s Role in Education and Prevention
Const. Della-Paolera has been actively engaging the community to spread awareness. He stresses the importance of trusting instincts and taking a step back when something feels off. Encouraging seniors to report suspicious activities is key to combating these crimes and supporting affected individuals.
A Call to Action for the Community
The growing number of scams underscores the need for continuous education and vigilance. Seniors are urged to remain cautious, verify information through trusted channels, and report any concerning interactions. Collective efforts from law enforcement, community organizations, and individuals are essential to safeguard seniors and build a more resilient community.
