DOD says it’s found $80 million in waste to trim from Pentagon budget with help from DOGE

Department of Defense and DOGE Team Identify $80 Million in Potential Cuts
In a significant effort to streamline operations and eliminate unnecessary spending, the Department of Defense (DOD) has announced that it has identified approximately $80 million in potential cuts. This initiative, made possible through a collaboration with Elon Musk’s DOGE team, aims to trim wasteful expenditures and redirect resources toward more critical military functions. The announcement, made on Monday, highlights a growing commitment to fiscal responsibility within the Pentagon.
A Closer Look at the Programs on the Chopping Block
Among the programs targeted for cuts are several Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, as well as grants provided to various universities for research projects. According to Sean Parnell, the chief spokesperson for the DOD, the Air Force had allocated nearly $2 million for holistic DEI transformation and training. Additionally, the Defense Human Resources Activity (DHRA), which manages personnel data and analysis for the DOD, spent $3.5 million to support DEI groups.
Other notable expenditures include $6 million disbursed to the University of Montana for a program aimed at strengthening American democracy by bridging societal divides. Similarly, the University of Florida received $1.6 million to study social and institutional determinants of vulnerability and resilience to climate hazards in the Sahel region of Africa. These funds were provided through the Minerva Research Initiative, a DOD-backed program established in 2008 to support research on strategically important global regions.
Distractions from the Core Mission
Sean Parnell emphasized that the programs listed are “not a core function of our military.” He described them as distractions from the DOD’s primary mission, asserting, “This is not what we do. This is a distraction from our core mission.” Parnell, a former U.S. Army Airborne Ranger, made it clear that the DOD’s focus should remain on enhancing military capabilities and lethality, rather than on initiatives that do not directly contribute to these goals.
The Path Forward: More Cuts and Greater Efficiency
The $80 million in identified cuts is only the beginning, according to Parnell. He revealed that the DOD, in partnership with the Department of Government Efficiency, is actively working to identify additional areas of wasteful spending. “We are working hand in glove with DOGE,” Parnell stated. “Stay tuned in the weeks ahead as we trim the fat, preserve the muscle, make the DOD more mission capable and more lethal.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s Stance on Wasteful Spending
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been a vocal proponent of addressing inefficiencies within the DOD. He previously expressed support for Elon Musk’s DOGE team joining forces with the Pentagon to identify unnecessary spending. Hegseth acknowledged the existence of “wastes, redundancies, and headcounts in headquarters that need to be addressed.” His stance underscores the broader effort to reform the DOD’s budgetary practices and ensure that resources are allocated more effectively.
The Broader Implications of the DOD’s Cost-Cutting Initiative
This cost-cutting initiative reflects a growing trend within the federal government to prioritize efficiency and accountability. By eliminating non-essential programs and redirecting funds toward critical military operations, the DOD aims to enhance its readiness and effectiveness. The collaboration with Elon Musk’s DOGE team signals a willingness to think outside the box and embrace innovative approaches to solving long-standing issues. As the DOD continues to identify and address wasteful spending, the hope is that these efforts will result in a more streamlined, capable, and lethal military force.
