Zelenskyy says ‘security guarantees’ are needed before any Putin talks

Zelenskyy’s Preconditions for Peace Talks with Putin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has set clear preconditions for peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized that any meeting with Putin can only occur after a unified plan to end the war has been established with US President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy made these statements during a meeting with US Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference. This platform provided an opportunity for him to articulate the necessity of security guarantees before any peace deal can be considered. Zelenskyy stressed that Europe must be involved in any future peace negotiations, as the conflict transcends Ukraine and impacts the entire continent.
The Importance of Security Guarantees
Zelenskyy underscored that security guarantees are paramount in any potential peace agreement. He highlighted that these guarantees must not only protect Ukraine but also the broader European community, as Ukraine is an integral part of Europe. Zelenskyy envisioned Ukraine’s future as part of an equal European Union, emphasizing the need for solidarity in ensuring regional security. He expressed that without these assurances, any peace deal would lack the foundation needed for lasting stability. This stance reflects his determination to secure Ukraine’s future within a unified Europe.
Direct Involvement of World Leaders
Zelenskyy stressed the necessity of direct involvement from major world leaders, particularly Donald Trump. He believes that Trump’s personal engagement is crucial for ending the Russian aggression. Zelenskyy conveyed his gratitude for US support under the Biden administration and appealed for continued backing, asserting that Trump’s involvement is key to negotiations. He dismissed the idea of mediation or indirect communication, making it clear that direct talks with Trump are essential for any meaningful progress toward peace.
Dismissal of Munich as a Peace Deal Venue
Zelenskyy firmly rejected the notion that a peace agreement could be signed in Munich. He reasoned that the absence of Trump at the conference and past disappointments with agreements signed there make it an unsuitable venue. This dismissal underscores his belief that significant decisions require the presence and commitment of key leaders, particularly Trump, to ensure the agreement’s viability and acceptance.
Strategic Benefits for the US
Zelenskyy also highlighted the strategic benefits for the US in supporting Ukraine. He explained that preserving Ukraine’s freedom prevents its natural resources from falling into Russian hands, which would undermine European stability and US interests. Zelenskyy pragmatically noted that protecting Ukraine is not just about defense but also about safeguarding financial and resource interests, aligning Ukraine’s security with US strategic goals.
Strengthening Sanctions on Russia
In addition to his discussions with US officials, Zelenskyy met with European leaders to advocate for stronger sanctions against Russia. He engaged with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa to push for a 16th EU sanctions package, intensifying pressure on Russia. These meetings reflect Zelenskyy’s comprehensive approach to resolving the conflict, combining diplomatic efforts with economic measures to weaken Russia’s position.
By structuring his approach around these key points, Zelenskyy aims to create a robust framework for ending the conflict, ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty, and maintaining European stability. His strategy emphasizes the need for international cooperation and the direct involvement of major leaders to achieve a lasting peace.
