Two tiny kittens, cruelly discarded with the rubbish, were rescued after being abandoned in a wheelie bin in Darlington, County Durham.

The young felines, now named Brooke and Sydney, were found locked inside a cat carrier within the bin on Chelmsford Street.

Their plight came to light when a concerned neighbor, alerted by the sound of their desperate meows, discovered them and intervened.

The kittens, believed to have been trapped for several days, were in a poor state, emitting a strong odor that suggested their ordeal had been prolonged.

They were promptly taken to the RSPCA, where they are now receiving care and attention.

Brooke, a tabby female, and Sydney, a black-and-white male, are said to be friendly and will soon be ready for adoption into loving homes.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Ruth Thomas-Coxon praised the quick-thinking individual who saved the kittens.

“The member of the public was alerted by meowing noises coming from the bin and found Brooke and Sydney inside,” she explained.

“They were described as being very smelly, so it’s possible they could have been in there for some time.

It was extremely fortunate their cries were heard, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to the person who found them and got them help, as well as to the vets for their assistance.”

Thomas-Coxon expressed her dismay at the incident, describing it as “hugely distressing” for the kittens and “shocking to think that someone could have deliberately abandoned them in this way.”

She added that the pair’s friendly and sociable nature will undoubtedly make them wonderful companions for the right families.

The RSPCA has launched an investigation to track down the individual responsible for this act of cruelty.

The kittens were discovered on January 11 between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and the charity is urging anyone with information to come forward.
