Three Children Killed in Tragic Grenade Blast While Playing in Garden

Three young children lost their lives in a devastating tragedy after a grenade exploded while they were playing outside in their shared front garden.
The powerful blast killed three-year-old Beila Giselle Balsa Sosa, her six-year-old brother Dylan Jhosue Bello Sosa, and their friend, six-year-old Edgar Mateo Tovar.
Their mother, Gibelly Sosa, was inside their home in Zaraza, a town southeast of Caracas, Venezuela, while the children were outside making kites.

She recalled hearing a noise that sounded like a bottle being opened, immediately followed by a deafening explosion.
She and her husband rushed outside to find their children gravely injured, surrounded by debris from the detonation.
One of the children had suffered the loss of a hand and a leg in the blast.
Neighbors quickly helped transport them to a nearby hospital, but tragically, two of them were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The third succumbed to critical injuries during emergency surgery.
Medical reports cited the cause of death as “hypovolemic shock caused by intracranial hemorrhage due to severe traumatic brain injury with multiple open wounds.”
Investigators at the scene suspect the grenade had been tied to a string and concealed beneath a paving slab, lying undetected until the children accidentally triggered it.
Authorities believe the area had previously been used as a base of operations for Yohany Machuca, a notorious criminal gang leader linked to extortion activities through his group, “La Banda del Pepón.”
Machuca was killed in a military and police raid in August 2024.
The children’s family had only been living in the home for two months before the horrific incident.
Police have taken the property owner into custody for questioning as they try to determine how the explosive ended up there.

The grieving community of Zaraza came together to lay the children to rest on March 10.
Mayor Carlos Castillo expressed the town’s sorrow, saying, “It’s a heartbreaking tragedy that deeply moves us.
We feel as if those three children were our own. Everyone in Zaraza is devastated.”
Authorities continue their investigation into the events leading up to the deadly explosion, which occurred on the afternoon of March 8.
