A dramatic scene unfolded in Liège, Belgium, when a high-speed train collided with a car that had mistakenly ended up on a level crossing.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, March 19, began when the car’s driver took a wrong turn and found herself directly on the train tracks.
Realising the error too late, she tried to back off, only for the level crossing barrier to come down behind her, trapping the vehicle in place.

In a desperate effort to escape, the woman attempted to drive through the barrier but couldn’t break free.
With seconds to spare, she and a male passenger jumped out of the car and moved to safety just before the oncoming train ploughed into the vehicle.
The collision sent the car hurtling across the road, debris scattered in its wake as stunned bystanders watched the aftermath unfold.
The crash brought traffic to a standstill and caused long delays for train services throughout the area.
The impact didn’t just disrupt transit—it also sparked debate among locals, with a flurry of reactions ranging from sympathy to disbelief.
Some speculated about what could have led to such a blunder.
One resident suggested the sun may have made it hard for the driver to spot the warning signals, noting that unfamiliarity with the roads could easily contribute to such mistakes.
“I can understand these accidents when you’re not used to the area,” the witness added.
Others, however, were less forgiving. “If there are red lights and a barrier, it’s not for nothing,” said Arnaud, pointing to the obvious warnings in place.

Meanwhile, Joelle couldn’t resist making a dry quip about the notoriously inconsistent Belgian rail service: “At least the trains were running for once.”
Despite the wreckage, both the driver and her passenger emerged uninjured.
But while they appeared relatively unfazed, according to one witness named Marlene, the emotional toll may have been heavier for the train operator.
“I feel sorry for the train driver who must have been very scared and is still in shock,” said Chantal, echoing the sentiments of those who recognized the psychological impact such incidents can have on rail staff.
As authorities investigate the circumstances behind the accident, the situation serves as a stark reminder of how a momentary lapse in judgment can trigger chaos—not just for those involved, but for everyone caught in the ripple effect.
