Airline passenger charged for allegedly threatening pilot, flight attendants: ‘I will really break your jaw!’

A disturbing incident unfolded on a recent flight from Miami to Newark Liberty International Airport, where a passenger’s alleged behavior escalated into a harrowing ordeal for everyone on board. According to federal prosecutors, 27-year-old Luis Vaquero, from Passaic County, New Jersey, is now facing serious charges after his reported outburst, which included threatening flight attendants, passengers, and even the pilot. The incident has shed light on the growing issue of disruptive behavior on flights and the potential consequences for those who engage in such actions.

The troubles began shortly after takeoff, prosecutors say, when Vaquero started threatening and harassing multiple passengers. Among the alarming allegations, Vaquero reportedly targeted a disabled minor and a group of Jewish passengers, making derogatory remarks and threats of physical violence. The situation further escalated when a flight attendant refused to serve Vaquero alcohol after the designated beverage service window had closed. In response, Vaquero allegedly warned the attendant, “You better watch out, s— is gonna happen to you,” adding to the tension on board. By the time the plane landed, the crew had already alerted law enforcement, who were waiting at Newark Liberty International Airport to intervene.

Upon hearing the announcement that law enforcement was en route to the aircraft, Vaquero’s behavior became even more volatile. Prosecutors allege that he forced his way to the front of the plane and began banging on the flight deck door, demanding, “I need the pilot to come outside!” When a flight attendant attempted to step in, Vaquero unleashed a barrage of threats, yelling, “I will really break your f—– jaw, n—-!” He also shouted, “I wanna see that f—– captain! Come outside, you b—- a– n—–!” The situation reached a boiling point when the captain emerged from the cockpit. Vaquero allegedly stood just six inches away from the pilot’s face, continuing to issue threats until law enforcement officers finally intervened and took him into custody.

Vaquero has been charged with one count of interference with flight crew members and attendants by assault or intimidation, a federal offense that carries serious penalties. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. During his initial court appearance, Vaquero was released, but the case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws related to aviation safety. Acting Special Agent in Charge Terence Reilly of the FBI’s Newark division emphasized the severity of Vaquero’s alleged actions, stating, “Over the course of a 3-hour flight, we allege Vaquero lost his temper and physically harassed not only the crew and captain but passengers, making threats of physical violence toward a disabled minor and mocking a group of Jewish passengers.”

Reilly continued, “It all culminated in a terrifying attack and attempted breach of the flight deck when witnesses say he banged on the cockpit door and confronted the pilot.” The FBI official also addressed the broader issue of disruptive behavior on flights, warning that such incidents are creating an atmosphere of fear and tension for both crew members and passengers. “The harrowing flight and other similar incidents onboard airplanes recently are creating tension and fear for fliers and crew members,” Reilly said. “FBI Newark has a warning for those who think it may not be a big deal—they’re breaking federal law, and they will be brought to justice.”
