Scarborough schools’ Superintendent Dr. Diane Nadeau explained during a press briefing that the 11 students were transported to the hospital “for further evaluation and precautionary measures.” The remaining students were safely escorted to nearby Scarborough High School while fire investigators worked to determine the cause of the reported illnesses. The school’s fire detection and carbon monoxide systems were functioning properly, and no hazards were detected in the building or the area where the students were practicing.

Scarborough Fire Chief Rich Kindelan corroborated Superintendent Nadeau’s timeline of events, adding that firefighters received a report of a potential gas leak and “some students in respiratory distress.” He emphasized that the building was thoroughly checked twice using two different sets of meters to ensure accuracy. “We did meter the building twice from two different fire department meters as a redundancy, just to make sure,” Kindelan said. “And there were no hazards found in the building or in the area of the incident.” The school already has fire detection and carbon monoxide detection systems in place, as required by safety regulations.

By Monday afternoon, students and staff had fully returned to the building, and the school resumed its normal activities. However, the cause of the mysterious respiratory issues remained unclear. Superintendent Nadeau noted that the temperature in the cafeteria was not assessed at the time the students were grouped together on the risers, leaving some to wonder if overcrowding or other environmental factors might have played a role. She also expressed uncertainty about whether the planned school concert would proceed as scheduled for Thursday evening.
