Missing American college student: Retired FBI agent identifies ‘critical’ steps likely taken by authorities

The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student during her spring break in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, has sparked a complex and collaborative investigation. She was last seen on surveillance footage at 4:15 AM with her group of five friends at the Riu República Hotel beach, clinging to a man. The Dominican National Police, along with the U.S. Embassy and FBI, are jointly investigating the case.
Jason Pack, a retired FBI agent, highlights that while the FBI cannot lead the investigation, they are using diplomatic channels to assist local authorities. Key steps include analyzing surveillance, phone data, and financial transactions, as well as employing cognitive interview techniques to detect inconsistencies in witness statements.
Nicole Parker, another former FBI agent, emphasizes the importance of identifying who Sudiksha was last seen with. Authorities are examining her phone and wallet for clues. The Dominican police are re-interviewing individuals who were near her at the time of her disappearance.
This international case presents challenges such as language barriers and differing legal systems. The FBI is providing forensic resources, including DNA analysis and digital forensics, which local authorities might lack. The FBI’s Victim Services Division is supporting Sudiksha’s family, offering updates and guidance.
While no suspects have been named, a person of interest with conflicting statements is under investigation. The case underscores the complexity of international cooperation and the need for effective communication between U.S. and Dominican authorities. The key focus remains on surveillance analysis, phone and financial data review, thorough witness interviews, and utilizing FBI resources for forensics and profiling.
As investigations continue, hopes remain high for Sudiksha’s safe return, with efforts centered on piecing together the circumstances of her disappearance through meticulous and collaborative efforts.
