Video shows the moment a passenger train smashes into an SUV, driver escapes with seconds to spare
A stunning video has captured the heart-stopping moment when the driver of an SUV narrowly escaped with their life just before their vehicle was struck by a Utah Transit Authority (UTA) passenger train in Layton, Utah. The dramatic footage, recorded from inside the locomotive, provides a chilling perspective of the events as they unfolded last week. The train can be seen barreling down the tracks toward a railroad crossing, where a white SUV had partially blocked the path. As the train approached, the operator sounded the horn repeatedly, a clear warning of the impending danger. Despite these warnings, the SUV remained in a precarious position, setting the stage for a catastrophic collision.
The video reveals the tense moments leading up to the crash. As the train approached the crossing, the SUV came into view, its position on the tracks a clear hazard. The train operator’s voice can be heard saying, “Oh, come on,” as the horn blared loudly, a desperate attempt to alert the driver to the danger. However, it was too late for the train to stop, and the locomotive slammed into the SUV with a loud thud. The force of the impact sent the vehicle spinning into the gate arm and its post, leaving the front end completely destroyed. Miraculously, the driver had managed to escape the SUV just in time, avoiding what could have been a fatal outcome.
Security cameras near the crossing provided another angle of the crash, offering a clearer view of the SUV driver’s actions in the moments leading up to the collision. The footage shows the driver approaching the railroad crossing as the red lights were flashing and the gate arm was lowering—a clear signal to stop. However, instead of halting before the gate, the driver continued forward, narrowly avoiding contact with the descending arm. The SUV then crossed onto the tracks, where the driver slammed on the brakes, bringing the vehicle to a stop with the rear wheels still between the two rails. At this point, the driver seemed to realize the predicament they were in and attempted to reverse. In doing so, the vehicle struck the gate arm, pushing it back and coming to a stop with the front wheels now blocking part of the tracks. The driver then continued to reverse, pushing the gate arm further out of the way before finally coming to a stop, exiting the vehicle, and quickly walking away. Seconds later, the train approached the intersection and struck the SUV, sending it spinning into the gate arm and its post, completely destroying the front end of the vehicle.
The aftermath of the collision highlights the potential consequences of such incidents. According to UTA, the crash caused over $100,000 in damage to the train, and both the gate and crossing post were damaged. However, the crossing post was reportedly repaired within 24 hours with assistance from the city of Layton. Despite the extensive damage, the most remarkable aspect of this incident is that no one was injured—a fact that UTA public information officer Gavin Gustafson emphasized in an interview with KSLTV in Salt Lake City. Gustafson stated that everyone involved was fortunate to have escaped without harm, a sentiment that underscores the gravity of the situation.
Gustafson also shared his perspective on the driver’s actions, noting that while it may be tempting to second-guess their decisions in the heat of the moment, it’s important to consider the potential shock and confusion they might have experienced. “I’m certainly not going to second-guess them in the heat of the moment,” Gustafson said. “And sometimes, the view might be blocked by something else, you don’t want to pull forward if there is another train coming.” His comments highlight the complexity of such situations and the need for empathy when assessing the actions of those involved. Gustafson did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for further comment on the matter.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to railroad crossing safety protocols. The flashing red lights and lowering gate arm are clear indicators that drivers should stop and wait until it is safe to proceed. Failing to do so can have devastating consequences, not only for the driver but also for passengers on the train and others in the surrounding area. While this particular incident ended without injury, it could have easily resulted in a tragic loss of life. As such, it serves as a powerful warning to drivers to exercise caution and respect the warnings provided at railroad crossings. TheListAdapterAdapter
