A Democratic lawmaker from Connecticut, Rep. Aundré Bumgardner, was arrested on Sunday morning after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. According to a police report obtained by Fox News Digital, Bumgardner, who serves in the Connecticut House of Representatives, was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence (OUI) and reckless driving. The incident has sparked widespread attention, as body camera footage captured the events leading to his arrest, including his failure to pass roadside sobriety tests. Bumgardner, who is 30 years old, has publicly taken responsibility for his actions, expressing remorse and gratitude that no one was harmed during the incident.

The arrest occurred after Bumgardner was pulled over by police. Initially, he told officers that he had “struck something” in the road and was returning home from an event with constituents. However, authorities observed that one of the front tires of his vehicle was flat and “barely staying on the rim.” Additionally, the police report noted that Bumgardner’s eyes appeared “red and glossy,” and a strong odor of alcohol was detectable on his breath. When questioned, Bumgardner initially denied having consumed any alcohol but later admitted to drinking. Body camera footage shows him stumbling during roadside sobriety tests, including a “walk and turn” test, which he attempted four times without success. When asked to stand on one foot, he struggled to maintain his balance and apologized to the officer, stating, “I’m sorry sir. I’m not much of a balancer.”

Bumgardner’s wife was reportedly asleep in the backseat of the car during the incident and remained unaware of what was happening. After failing the sobriety tests, Bumgardner was placed under arrest, handcuffed, and transported to the Groton Police Department. His wife, who had slept through the entire encounter, was driven home by officers. During the booking process, Bumgardner appeared evasive when asked to sign paperwork informing him of his rights, and he expressed discomfort with the body camera, saying it felt “very invasive.” His license was revoked for 24 hours, and he was released after being ordered to appear in court next week.

In response to the arrest, Bumgardner issued a statement on Monday, taking full responsibility for his actions and apologizing for the mistake. “I recognize the seriousness of this situation and am committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure it never happens again,” he said. He also expressed gratitude that no one was injured and acknowledged the disappointment he caused to his family, friends, colleagues, and constituents. Connecticut House Speaker Matt Ritter also addressed the incident, stating that he was “disappointed and disheartened” by Bumgardner’s arrest. Ritter noted that Bumgardner had been removed from his leadership positions and committee assignments “until further notice,” but emphasized that the young lawmaker is “dedicated and compassionate” and is taking ownership of his actions.

Bumgardner, who was re-elected to the House in 2022, served as the assistant majority leader of the House Democratic caucus and was a member of several key committees, including Finance, Environment, Energy, and Transportation. His arrest has raised questions about his continued leadership roles and the potential consequences for his political career. While he has expressed a commitment to regaining the trust of his constituents and colleagues, the incident has undoubtedly cast a shadow over his reputation and responsibilities.

The case of Rep. Aundré Bumgardner underscores the challenges faced by public figures who are expected to uphold high standards of behavior. While Bumgardner has taken responsibility for his actions and apologized, the incident serves as a reminder of the personal and professional consequences of driving under the influence. As he navigates this difficult situation, Bumgardner will need to work diligently to rebuild trust and demonstrate his commitment to serving the people of Connecticut with integrity. For now, the focus remains on the legal proceedings and the internal disciplinary actions taken by state leadership.
